Choosing an Airline for My Temporary Trip Back to Japan This July./Part 1

I’ll be returning to Japan from July 20 to July 30 for a short visit.

For the past ten years or so, I’ve been fortunate enough to use airline miles to fly home in First Class, usually on JAL or ANA. Back then, award tickets required far fewer miles, and the flight itself was often one of the highlights of the trip.

Things have changed quite a bit over the years. The number of miles required for premium cabin awards has increased significantly, and finding available seats has become much more difficult. My mileage balance has also been largely depleted, so this time I’ll be purchasing a ticket instead of redeeming miles.

As a result, I’m paying much closer attention to airline schedules, routing, and ticket prices than I used to.

One decision I seem to face every time I travel back to Japan is whether to fly JAL or ANA. This trip is no exception.

My final destination is Nagoya, and the most important factor for me is arriving there as early as possible.

At first, JAL seemed like the better option. In fact, the JAL flight from Chicago arrives at Narita slightly earlier than the ANA flight. However, after looking at the domestic connections, I realized that the available flights from Narita to Nagoya depart relatively late, resulting in a longer overall travel time.

ANA also arrives at Narita, but its connection to Nagoya is much more convenient. Even though ANA reaches Narita later than JAL, I would actually arrive in Nagoya earlier by taking ANA.

For me, the destination isn’t Tokyo—it’s Nagoya. What really matters is not what time I arrive in Japan, but what time I arrive in Nagoya.

With that in mind, ANA has become the leading candidate for this trip.

The return flight is another story. Ideally, I’d like to fly nonstop from Haneda to Chicago. Unfortunately, flights departing from Haneda are often considerably more expensive than those leaving from Narita.

So I’m still weighing my options:

  • Fly ANA and arrive in Nagoya as early as possible
  • Prioritize the convenience of departing from Haneda on the return trip
  • Or save money by flying out of Narita instead

Years ago, I spent my time deciding which First Class cabin I wanted to fly. This year, I’m spending my time comparing schedules, connections, and ticket prices. It feels a little different, but perhaps that’s just part of how travel evolves over time.

Either way, I’m looking forward to being back in Japan. Until I finally book my ticket, I’ll probably continue debating the options a little longer.
